About this place

Angkor Wat is the crown jewel of Cambodia's ancient Khmer Empire, built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II. Originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, this massive temple complex spans over 400 acres and is the largest religious monument ever constructed.

The temple's iconic five towers, representing Mount Meru — the home of the gods in Hindu mythology — are surrounded by a vast moat and elaborate galleries adorned with intricate bas-relief carvings depicting Hindu epics, historical battles, and celestial beings.

Beyond Angkor Wat itself, the greater Angkor Archaeological Park contains dozens of temples, including the tree-enveloped Ta Prohm and the enigmatic faces of Bayon Temple.
