About this place
Borobudur is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple in Central Java, Indonesia. It is the world's largest Buddhist temple and one of the greatest Buddhist monuments ever built. The temple consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome.
Decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues, the monument is a masterpiece of Indonesian art that tells the story of Buddha's path to enlightenment. The sunrise experience at Borobudur, with mist rolling over the surrounding volcanoes and rice paddies, is considered one of Southeast Asia's most magical moments.
Nearby, the Hindu temple compound of Prambanan offers a stunning architectural counterpoint, making the Yogyakarta region a world-class cultural destination.
